The Guiro is a Latin American percussion instrument which is believed to have originated with the Taino people. It plays a key role in the typical Cumbia rhythm section. Like maracas, guiros are usually played by the band’s singer. The instrument’s rasping sounds add counterpoint to folk music and is also frequently used in salsa bands.
Children can play the IQ Plus Guiro by holding it in the left hand and keep the instrument in place. The other hand holds the scraper and rubs the instrument with the stick. Playing the guiro usually requires both short and long sounds which are made by scraping both up and down in long and short strokes.
Children will notice the difference between sounds that short and long strokes can produce, which is good practice for developing hearing and motor skills. In the classroom, guiros can be used to practice many different rhythmic patterns. Children can learn to practice the faster tempos slowly at first, gradually bringing up the tempo when feel more comfortable to experiment with the instrument. Guiros should be used in conjunction with other percussion instruments, together creating music and experimenting with new rhythms.
