The word “Ashiko” comes from the Yoruba (or Nigeria as we know it today)  word which means “freedom”.  The Ashiko drum is part of Yoruba ancient culture in which it was used as a talking drum to communicate over long distances.  A skilled Ashiko player can make the drum “talk”, communicating phrases and innuendos all transmitted through his/her music.  Ashikos were also played in traditional spiritual practices to appease and commune with otherworldly forces.  They were used in many religious ceremonies or by villagers in their various social dance rituals.

Ashikos are an excellent instrument to impart musical knowledge development, especially rhythm.  Children can learn different rhythmic patterns with this instrument and simultaneously develop essential motor skills.  This instrument is traditionally played with the hands and can create soft or loud sounds depending on the power and technique applied.  The Ashiko can be a great teaching tool in a music class; It can be play individually or as part of a percussion
